The Importance of a Well Balanced Diet

A well-balanced diet is essential to overall good health. For those of us living with chronic illness, making informed dietary decisions can boost energy, help maintain strength, and ward off preventable disease brought on by poor nutrition. This is one aspect of our lives that is firmly within our control!

Fresh produce, lean meats, and whole grains should be at the top of your shopping list. Foods high in sugar and empty carbohydrates should be avoided or used sparingly. Food is fuel for your body and you shouldn’t expect it to function well on poor quality fuel.

One of my favorite meals is salmon. I love the flavor, the texture, and the variety of recipes. The numerous health benefits of salmon give me piece of mind that I’m making a sound choice. An excellent source of Omega-3 fatty acids, ocean farmed salmon is also high in protein and low in trans-fatty acids, saturated fat, and calories.

My husband finds salmon a bit strong and prefers a salmon recipe with powerful flavorings, while I prefer a minimalist approach. Finally, I hit on the idea that since it’s just the two of us, I could easily prepare two salmon recipes for one meal and satisfy us both!

Get the straight salmon facts before allowing misinformation to scare you off.

* Fears about mercury do not apply to ocean farmed or wild salmon.

* The American Heart Association recommends that adults consume at least two servings of fish high in Omega-3 fatty acids per week.

Put salmon on your shopping list, choose a recipe, and start down the path toward a balanced diet.
