Opponents brought out the big guns of fear and, as is usually the case when people have no confidence in what they are saying, they got louder and more outrageous in their protests. Civility has been in short supply and the wounds are deep.

Health Care Reform and The Pod People

The health care debate has brought about a feeling that there are still ‘pod people’ walking amongst us. Our present day ‘pod people’ are, like in the movie, ‘indistinguishable from normal people’ until they open their mouths to spout their nonsensical and ill-informed opinions regarding health care reform — or just about any bill or program championed by the President. When that happens, what spills out is so ugly, so vile, so petty, silly, ignorant, and just incredibly stupid that it takes you aback and makes you wonder how these folks function in a society where they are plainly afraid of so many things and where they fear the bogeyman lurks around every corner.

871694_handicap_ramp_sign_1You really have to see it to believe it. At a town hall meeting in New Jersey, a woman in a wheelchair is shouted at while she tries to tell her story. The costs associated with her two incurable autoimmune diseases are threatening her ability to pay for her medications, and she fears losing her home. She speaks, but the hecklers never let up, never listen.

She wants nothing more than to explain her situation and take part in the “debate” on health care reform. She pleads in vain for those present to “please hear this voice of the disabled.” But these folks are not here to hear. They are here to prevent hearing…

doctors_mainHealth care reform is not about President Obama and whether you like him or loathe him. It’s not about Democrats or Republicans, right wing or left, your team or mine. Health care reform is — or should be — about you and me, about human beings and one of our most basic needs.

It should be about providing adequate health care for all in America, one of the richest nations on earth, one which offers the finest health care to those fortunate enough to fall into the proper categories.
